This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My name is Rodrigo and I am beginning my career in Special Education this year at Frankford High School. I will be teaching 7 exceptional tenth-graders in a self-contained Autistic Support classroom.

I have never had a classroom of my own.

I did a residency program last year (2022-23) during which I observed and learned from a veteran Life Skills teacher. The experience was amazing, rewarding, intense, and it was a great way to get acquainted with what tools I will be using the most in my first year as a SPED teacher. Such tools are included in the list. I made sure I included things that are a bit out of my budget at the moment that will see use from day one.

1) A laminator to preserve important documents, student work, and make dry-erase worksheets. Laminating worksheets is a great way to save paper and a cheaper way to create classroom visuals like visual schedules, routines, or calendars.

2) A classroom printer for times when the school-wide printer is out of order or for small print-jobs that need to be expedited. My school has a printer available to all teachers and staff. However, there are times when having a printer available in the classroom is valuable as it saves time and it allows for easy rectifying should there be printing errors. I expect to be printing a lot!

3)A good quality bluetooth speaker to play music, guided-meditations, among other things. A separate bluetooth speaker streamlines the utilization of music and sound in the classroom. The main use will be for playing sound from my phone when the SMART board is being used for a crucial visual prompt. Surprisingly, the SMART board's sound engine is not the most reliable!
