My Students

I am a first grade teacher at an inner city public school. The school is located in a high poverty/low income area where 100% of the population is eligible for free breakfast and lunch programs. Many of my first grade students come to school without supplies need to learn. I am often told but the students that they do not have any books at home. Despite the many struggles that these students face, they come to school ready and excited to learn. It is my goal to instill in them a love of learning.

My Project

My first graders love to read and love being read to. Having this library of leveled readers in our classroom would make a great impact! Having these materials would benefit the students greatly. They would be able to select books to read based on their levels to further support their reading growth. Often times children select books based on the cover photos and open them up only to discover the book is too difficult for them. If the students can go directly to the bin designated for their level, this issue would be avoided completely. I know the students will be thrilled to see this!
