Help! We need books. I am a third grade special education teacher. Many of my students struggle learning to read and understand text. I need books to read aloud in order to demonstrate various comprehension strategies.
My students are third graders who attend school in New York.
I need books to read aloud to my students. Many of my students get frustrated when reading because they do not comprehend the text. I need interesting books that will captivate my students and foster a love of reading. Children must build various reading strategies to use while they read. It is important to get my students to think while they read, to develop an awareness of their thinking, and to use strategies that help them to comprehend.
My Project
The best way to teach comprehension strategies is by modeling strategies to students. The books I have chosen will be used to model strategies such as making connections, questioning, inferring, and visualizing while reading. The best way to teach students how to comprehend is by showing them instead of telling them. Therefore, I will read these books aloud. Before reading, I will explain the strategy. I will demonstrate how to apply the strategy successfully. While I read aloud, I will think aloud to model the mental processes I use when I read. I will explicitly teach these reading comprehension strategies so my students can use them to construct meaning. I will model the strategy for the class. Then I will guide the students in its practice in small groups and pairs. During the day, students will be given large blocks of time to read independently and practice applying and using the strategy. Eventually, the goal is for my students to use these strategies automatically and seamlessly
Your help is needed.
You will make it possible for my students to become active readers. They will become students who think when they read. Please donate. You will be making a difference in my students' lives. You will be helping them comprehend text and foster their love of reading. Thank you.
