We have limited access to hands-on materials for the number of students in our school. Students need authentic experiences with rocks and minerals to be able to differentiate between the different types of rocks and minerals.
I teach a group of students who are high learners but don't spend a lot of time outdoors.
They come to my classroom with some knowledge of the earth sciences but with little hands-on experiences. This is the first grade where students change classes and have the opportunity to have science for an extended period of time. With more time and hands-on resources, science can come to life for students.
My Project
Students enjoy learning about rocks and minerals. However, it is almost impossible to teach them the differences between rocks and minerals without being able to actually hold them in their hand. If this grant proposal is funded, I will be able to purchase sets of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks to use in collaborative groups for inquiry based labs. Additionally, I am asking for a UV light to test for fluorescence in my rocks and minerals station lab.
If this project is funded, it will increase the number of opportunities my students have to do inquiry based, authentic science.
Furthermore, I know it will help my students have true understanding of the different types of rocks and minerals which will prepare them for not only the state science test but also the content they will study in future years.
