I teach 6th grade science and social studies in North Carolina. Minerals is such a great topic to teach our children what the crust they walk on every day contains. Knowing your minerals is also a great stepping stone to knowing what makes up the rock you have in your back yard.
My students are a wonderful group of diverse learners.
I feel that by giving them a hands on activity it will help them have a much deeper understanding of mineral, rocks, and the Earths layers. Most of my students are from a low economic class, so having access to this type of activity would give them a whole new appreciation for geology. I have found that most sixth graders need engaging hands on activities to make them interested in the topic being taught. I feel this grant would give my students new understanding of the concept being taught and open up a new appreciation for science lessons.
My Project
I have requested a mineral testing kit which would enable the students to take a mineral and run a series of test to prove with out a doubt what mineral they have. I also requested a tub of geodes so that students get the chance to open them up and examine what is inside. Most of my students have never seen the wonder of what is inside a geode, and this would not only give them that chance but give them the satisfaction of opening it themselves. This equipment will also foster student to student learning by allowing small group cooperation. The benefits of this equipment will help the students have concrete proof of what they are learning.
My hope is that giving my students a fun approach to minerals will increase their understanding of the concept and make them want to learn more about the Earth they live on.
Your assistance could help create future scientists, geologists, and rock hounds.
