I am a second-year teacher, recently moved to a 3rd grade teaching position in a high poverty school in the northwest. All of my students are on free or reduced school lunch and breakfast. There is a wide range of diversity in our classroom, with 6 different native languages being spoken by my 21 students. While there are many challenges presented by the school environment and the linguistic and cultural differences with my students, I personally know that there is no where else that I would rather teach.
As a brand new 3rd grade teacher, I do not have many science books or materials that are age or level-appropriate for my students. As part of our third grade curriculum, we need to have materials that will help us to teach earth science to our students. As a second-year teacher, I don't personally have the means to purchase all of the resources needed in my classroom. There is also no available funding in our school or district. While, all of my students love learning about earth science, we need assistance in purchasing materials to support and teach the curriculum.
Our classroom needs non-fiction earth science books, 1 globe, and 1 rocks and minerals set in order to engage and hook my students during our earth science study. When students have non-fiction books that support the science topics we are learning about, they will be able to better understand what they are learning. These materials will not only enhance their learning, but my students will become more engaged and motivated to learn about earth science. Non-fiction books and interactive materials will help create a student-centered classroom environment to help my students to not only understand science, but they will come to appreciate science and all that it has to offer.
