Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 6th year science teacher at an urban high school. I was an engineer for 10 years before switching into teaching and I use my engineering experience to show my students how physics relates to the real world. My students are great, smart, curious, hardworking students. They are all 11th and 12th graders. The high school is an urban high school with 95% of the students qualifying for free meals.

We do not have much money for lab equipment and my students deserve to be able to do high quality labs in their physics class. They also deserve to be able to do projects to apply their knowledge.

I need to engage and excite the students in my class. Many of them don't see the need for science education, or have not been able to experience the joy of science and discovery. I am trying to change that by doing more projects in physics. These resources will allow me to do that. My students need rocketry materials for their final project in physics. The materials will allow them to design, build, and launch model rockets.

This project, Rocket Science, will allow the students to apply much of their physics knowledge in one final project. They will use kinematics to calculate the flight parameters of their rocket, including it's altitude, use their knowledge of thermodynamics and fluids to calculate the thrust requirements for the launch, and then use design skills, hands on skills, and imagination to design, build, and launch their rockets. This project will show them how much fun science can be and hopefully encourage them to pursue science and engineering as a career. Instead of just doing problems in class, they will be able to see physics in action.
