For many of my students, English is not their first language, and many of their family members only speak Spanish. Many of them live in homes where multiple generations share a small square footage and distance learning has been difficult for many of these students; however, the isolation has been the hardest of all on our students.
Our students are amazing, creative, talented individuals, who sometimes lack the resources to fully explore their talents.
On "Fun Fridays" throughout the semester, our ninth grade team has used advisory lessons to plan costume contests, digital drawing activities, and other various methods of nurturing the students' creative side. Many of our students are feeling some screen fatigue, however, and would love to do some more tactile activities.
My Project
Our students have been learning virtually since March 2020, without any time on campus. I am the ninth grade team leader this year, and I teach a ninth grade advisory and ninth grade English classes. Our ninth graders are in a particularly interesting position, having started high school completely virtually.
Many of our freshmen have never met each other in person.
It is difficult to create a sense of unity as a class among students who are learning entirely over Zoom, but we work hard to do this having grade level Zoom meetings on "Fun Fridays" where we do Fun activities together. For our final "Fun Friday" of the year, we'd like to introduce the students to the kindness rocks project and participate in rock painting together over Zoom.
Students will paint rocks and can put positive messages on them. We will encourage them to hide the rocks around the community where people can find them, so that the rocks may bring joy to others.
