My Students

Do you remember reading your science text book and just when you got to the interesting part, the part where you got to do something, the teacher said, "Well we are going to skip this, we don't have the materials or time."? I do not want that to happen to my students!

My students are amazing!

They come to my class ready to learn about science. They are inquisitive, hard working, and fun. We have a wonderful school with a caring staff. The only thing we lack is money. Its hard to get colored paper, let alone rock collections. Most of my students live in poverty and the parents do not have the resources to donate items or money. Money has become even tighter as the economy has gotten worse. Despite our lack of funding, my students are still excited and happy to come to school. Everyday I strive to make sure they have interesting, exciting, and educationally relevant lessons.

My Project

Two of the grade levels I teach have large rock units in their science standards. Both 2nd and 4th graders will learn about the different types of rocks, their formations, and classifications. It is so much easier for the students to understand when we have real rocks to examine. Just taking out the box of rocks elicits happy squeals of pleasure from the students. While we have some rocks in our collection we need more. Each group of rocks and minerals have specific properties. The more specimens we have, the more the students can apply their knowledge. With enough rocks for all the children to see we can spend more time on learning and experimenting and less time on waiting for a turn with the rock. Each time students are exposed to interesting, hands on science we have another opportunity to interest them in pursuing science as a career.

The best thing about this project is it is a project that keeps on giving.

Students in my classes will be able to utilize these rocks for years to come. Year after year students will be excited and interested in learning about rocks and minerals as they eagerly examine the real life materials in front of them.
