My Students

Do you remember being little and singing songs at the top of your lungs? Nobody cared what your voice was like or whether you knew the lyrics or not. Many of my preschool students with special needs can’t or won’t talk, but I find when I turn on the music, something inside them turns on too!

When I turn the music on, students whose voices I have never heard are suddenly the loudest children in the room!

Music does something to their souls! The students in my class range from 3 to 5 years old. Most of my preschoolers are children identified with a developmental delay in language, in addition to being English Language Learners. When the students started school in September, my classroom was the quietest classroom in the school. I realized fairly quickly, I better do something quick! So I turned on the music! It took awhile, but some of the students with minimal language started singing! My students live in a low socioeconomic neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley; our school is a Title 1 school (federally funded due to an impoverished community), and 100% of our students participate in the free lunch program. I want to engage my students through music and bring their language to life!

My Project

Resources are limited in this Title 1 School and I have been unable to locate a working CD player. So I brought mine from home. When the winter holidays came, I wanted to play some cassette tapes, so again I went on a hunt for a working tape player. Unable to find one, I finally settled on a broken CD player that had tape decks built in. My classroom music equipment now consists of the broken tape player on the bottom and my CD player precariously balanced on top. I play CDs in the top, and tapes in the bottom. Sometimes the songs don’t play, and my little cuties, who have very short attention spans, are left waiting for the music to come on. I need a sturdy functional multimedia player in order to play CDs, tapes, and even hook up an iPod for seamless musical interactions in my classroom. I would like to burn CDs of the student’s favorite songs, and have them play without having to cross my fingers and hope the Welcome Song will start up!

It is so important that preschoolers with serious language needs be motivated to use their voices.

Many of them come from homes where their families do not understand the importance of talking, reading, or singing to them. It is critical to sing with preschoolers everyday. New equipment will enhance the musical experience for all of them. I expect with a generous donation, the music will reach into their little souls and bring out their inner voices!
