My Students

We are a Title I school in an urban area of Los Angeles. Nearly one hundred percent of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. When the current health crisis hit, many of our students lacked the basic tools for learning at home: computers or tablets, an internet connection, and a stable, consistent routine for completing their work.

Now that we are well into the school year, the students have stepped up to the challenge and are learning how to complete new tasks each day.

They are becoming more self-sufficient as they tackle the various online assignments. However, we lack the supplies for hands-on science learning at home.

My Project

My students need hands-on lessons in science, but because of the constraints of distance learning, that's not always possible. The next best thing is to watch me demonstrate the topics we read about in the textbook. After learning about erosion, students were curious about how rocks end up smooth and polished.

I explained how a rock tumbler works and could see the looks of fascination on their faces.

Having a rock tumbler to use during distance learning would enable me to demonstrate the process over several weeks. Once we're back in the classroom and in future years, I would use it with the students in person.
