This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A piano missing half its keys, a drum set in need of repair, and a dusty room that hadn't been used in years: this is what our school rock band faced up to on the first practice.

My students have a deep passion for music and performance.

Our school is located in an urban area with the vast majority of students receiving free lunch. It is a small school occupying part of a large school which, before it was closed down, housed one of the most dynamic music programs in the area. With the equipment and music rooms in disrepair, we're trying to reinvigorate the program and give all students a chance to make music a part of their education. This isn't about becoming self-absorbed rock stars--these students love the way music allows them to share a meaningful connection with members of their families and communities.

My Project

With a bass guitar, our fledgling band will take an important step towards having all the instruments of a rock band. A new guitar and amp package and some picks and strings will help keep us rocking through the end of the year. This will build confidence and improve teamwork skills. You can't imagine the pride that new electric instruments will give the students.

Music opens up new worlds for students, allowing them to develop their talents and imaginations.

These instruments will allow them to share these talents with their friends, family and the rest of the school community. We are ready to rock!
