My Students

Remember curling up on the couch with a Magic Tree House book, and being whisked away to another world? Or, leaning against a parent's shoulder as they read The Cat in the Hat for the 10,000th time? My students would love the same opportunity, but so far our classroom library leaves them wanting...

My students come from all over the world, from Pakistan, Nepal, Bosnia, Guinea, Eritrea, Mexico and more!

Many speak another language at home before English, so having books that are perfectly on their level is extremely important to their developing literacy skills. They love to read, they love books, but unfortunately I don't have as many as they would like in our classroom library as a first year teacher.

My Project

Right now our classroom library is in dire straits. There were a few books available from the school at the beginning of the year but the bulk of what we have are books from my own childhood. The pages and covers are worn on the few books that are there. What's worse is that often there aren't enough books at a given level for students to practice with. This is why I have requested two copies of the Magic Tree House book series for my on grade level readers, classic books by Dr. Seuss for my lower level readers who are pushing hard to make gains, and some Flat Stanley novels to spur a sense of wonder in the world for all my readers.

My goal and my students' goal is to grow a year and a half in their reading level in one school year.

We aim for nothing less because this is what closes the achievement gap. Having perfectly leveled books will work at each student's instructional level allowing them to make the most of their in-class reading time and give them the perfect books to take home each night.
