My Students

Our students are special because of the unique type of education they receive at our school. EIHS is an open-access magnet school with the Houston Independent School District with no admission requirements. Our students take courses in Engineering all four years they attend the high school, and graduate with a STEM endorsed diploma. Our school is the only in the nation with an energy-industry engineering focus, and all learning in every classroom occurs through Project Based Learning (PBL).

Through PBL, our students learn how to make, do, and think using non-traditional teaching techniques (as in, no lecture, no movies, no "sit-and-get").

By the time they graduate, our students will have worked in dozens of teams, learned how to become good team members, develop project management skills, and will have delivered over a 100 formal presentations to teachers and professionals from the Houston community. They will have also developed competencies in industry-relevant equipment, such as CAD, drafting, power tools, machine shop tools, rapid prototyping such as 3D printing, and CNC equipment like laser cutters, mills, and routers.

My Project

Specifically, we are requesting hand tools and hand tool sets to help with the mechanical construction of robots, and additional tools and materials for the electronics and electrical aspect of robot design. These tools will be used in the Robotics Lab, and will be available for our in-class students and our after-school competition teams to use. As our school has been experiencing budget issues this year, and as our local community has been affected by Harvey, income sources for updated and new tools has been difficult to find in Houston. Robotics has set the culture for our school, and it's important that we have the materials and supplies necessary to keep learning hands-on.

Because the robot designs our students build do not depend on kits, each aspect of the robot design is custom made, and this often requires extra tooling.

We require additional tools such as socket sets, pliers, screw drivers, and hammers to help with the construction of the robot chassis, drive trains, and scoring mechanisms, like lifts, claws, or flywheel shooters. We are also requesting funding for additional electrical tools, such as solder, wire strippers, and crimping tools that assist the students with wiring the robot motors and sensors. Each wire must be made to the correct length and with the correct attachments, and these tools will greatly assist with that. We would also like a label maker to help with shop organization and to reduce the number of lost tools, which overall helps keep costs down. We are also requesting an additional Ethernet switch, which is used for wireless communication between the robot driver (the controller) and the robot itself.

We appreciate you considering our project!
