My Students

"Technology can become the “wings” that will allow the educational world to fly farther and faster than ever before—if we will allow it." -- Jenny Arledge Technology is the driving force of the future. My students have used technology, but one area we have not deeply explored is computer programming.

Our school (Pre-K through 5th) is located in a high military town and has 100% participation in the free/reduced lunch program this year.

Our students were introduced to coding by participating in the world wide Hour of Code event. Something special happened after this event. Students became intrigued by coding, often requesting to work on programs like scratch and lightbot in school and at home. Our students have a wonderful sense of curiosity, use higher order thinking skills to ask great questions and love to be challenged. Coding is accessible to wide range of students, and easy to differentiate depending on certain needs when working on a project. I know my students will love when we are able to check these out of the library (kept there for safe keeping and possible sharing) and are able to enjoy these computer programming activities.

My Project

This year, I want to elaborate and build on to our Hour of Code experience and bring computer programming to our classroom. I am asking for six Wonder Workshop Dot Robotics Kits, five Makey Makey Kits, and five sets of alligator leads The Makey Makey allows students to make a variety of objects into a keyboard or controller. Dash & Dot robots are hands-on learning tools that teach creativity, problem solving, and coding to children. Children can see their code come to life in a real-world, hands-on way that engages them fully in the concepts they are learning about. As robotics and computers become increasingly prevalent in students’ lives, understanding programming concepts is becoming very important for students’ success. Students will work in small groups to develop their collaboration and communication abilities as they learn valuable 21st century skills. Help our students get introduced to STEM early and and cultivate their skills for the opportunities of today’s world.

These tools will make a difference for my students because they help to inspire students.

Today's kids will be tomorrow's adults. I want to help inspire kids to be able to problem solve, work collaboratively, enjoy learning, invent, make, design and love every minute of it. Our budgets have been cut significantly for the past several years and we have a hard time finding funds for basic needs let alone wonderful tools like these. We are excited to be considered for an Infy Maker project.
