Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hispanic students, particularly girls, are vastly underrepresented in the fields of Science and Engineering. One of the best ways to interest students in these fields is through robotics. I sponsor a robotics team of 4th and 5th grade students, all Hispanic, 50% girls, and 50% boys. My commitment is to ensure that the team is equally comprised of girls and boys, and that all of the students work on the problems for each tournament challenge. Each tournament typically involves building and programming robots to perform specific challenges, as well as a problem solving component in which students research and create a solution to a real world problem, then present their findings in front of judges. Robotics tournaments build teamwork, confidence, problem solving, and critical thinking in children. This is the first year our team has competed in district tournaments, and we had a great time at the First Lego League tournament in December. We're in the early stages of building our program, and plan to expand to include more students as we obtain the equipment. We have the basic Mindstorms kit, but there is now a new version called NXT. My students would love to have the ?super cool, really awesome, we could do amazing things with that? Mindstorms NXT robotics kit!
