Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all children living with Autism. They range in severity from being limitedly verbal to higher functioning. All my students are on modified curriculum and are a few years behind their current grade level in terms of academic performance and social abilties. They require a low teacher to student ratio and are in a highly structured classroom to maximize learning potential. Most students are dually exceptional as many students have multiple disabilities. Our school is composed mainly of students that speak English as a second language, are on free and reduced lunch, and low socioeconomic status.

A child with Autism is just a puzzle waiting to be solved.

I get to spend 180 school days each year trying to figure out why they so certain things and how I can make them learn. With the help of my amazing paraprofessional we are ever trying to solve the mystery that each child walks into our classroom with.

My Project

The use of robots in the classroom is a fairly new concept. Sadly the use of robotics or other STEM activities are rarely seen in self-contained Autism classes. It is my hope that this project changes this. With the use of the software and robot my children will learn to code these robots to perform critical thinking activities. It will require my students to problem solve and think of a solution independent from the textbook.

Robotics is an ever-growing field in which children with Autism can flourish.

Our children enjoy technology, but seldom have to opportunity to use technology for true learning purposes that have everlasting effects. With the use of the Dash and Dot robots, my students will be able to apply mathematical and scientific concepts through an application approach to learning that will have a more significant impact than paper pencil examinations.
