My Students

Our junior high math club is made up of students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. They are a great group of students who either love math or know they can get better at math with practice and hard work. We participate in math competitions, play math games, create videos that explain how to solve challenging problems, tutor students in lower grades, and manage a library of mathematics take-home kits for students grades K-5.

I really enjoy working with my math club students because of their dedication, persistence, and willingness to help other students.

We are a small K-12 school, so all of the students are very involved in many activities. I am always amazed at how many of these busy children are willing to give up their time to participate in math club. In a small school, it can be hard to address the needs of all students. Math club provides some much-needed support for students that struggle in math by helping them gain confidence, reinforce skills they have learned, and teach them new concepts in a very non-threatening and fun environment. It also provides advanced students the chance to explore math and extend their learning.

My Project

Most of my students have always lived in a remote part of Nebraska. Many have never seen a robot other than in movies and have very little or no experience with coding. With technology developing quickly in the world around us, being exposed to robotics and coding at a young age can help them understand the world around them better and open up many future opportunities they could not even imagine.

The students in our math club will use the LEGO Mindstorms set to experiment with robotics and coding to learn 21st century and critical thinking skills while working as a team.

Not only are they excited to learn STEM and critical thinking skills through robotics, but they are also excited to share what they learn with younger students. Once they feel comfortable with the basics and have done several successful projects, they are planning to partner with students in lower grades to help them build projects and code their robots as well. Please help me share this technology with my students to encourage them to persevere when learning something new, work with others, and help them be ready for future opportunities.
