My Students

Imagine if the only place that you knew about was the neighborhood that you grew up in. Imagine if you heard about cowboys, the Grand Canyon, and dogsled races, but you had no idea where they would be or what they were like. That is the reality for many of my students that I want to change.

My students are third grade students that attend a Title I school.

Most of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Because of their backgrounds, many of the students have very limited experience with traveling outside of the state. They aren't sure of the names of the states of our country, let alone be able to tell someone anything about the different states. The students are eager to learn about new places that they have not been to.

My Project

The books purchased will be used to help to integrate Social Studies instruction with reading. The books have been chosen based on how well they depict various geographic regions and periods in American history. Having whole class sets will allow each of the students to read the books and individually interact with the text. Through reading these stories, students will be able to identify and connect with how the characters reacted to the events of their historical period.

The books donated will have a huge impact on the students.

The texts will enable them to learn about distant places in the country that they have never been to and to learn about the history of the country. The texts will allow them to discuss the problems that the characters in the books faced in light of problems that are faced today. It is important that children learn about the country that they are living in, not only the names of the states or landmarks, but its history, as well.
