My Project

As a science teacher, I want my students to feel like scientists. I believe that in order to build students' understanding and appreciation for biology and zoology, it is important to actually have living specimens in our science lab for students to care for, observe, and study.

This complete river tank ecosystem is the perfect way for my zoology students to get experience raising and caring for animals; it will also help my biology students understand natural cycles and learn about ecological relationships in real time.

Students will learn about photosynthesis and cellular respiration, as well as the carbon and water cycles through this ecologically balanced tank. Plants and flowing water will provide an oxygen-rich environment for aquatic organisms, whose waste products will provide nutrients for the terrestrial plants. Students will be able to compare invertebrate and vertebrate anatomy as we study crustaceans, arthropods, fish, and other tank inhabitants. The tank will also provide a calming environment for my classroom.
