My Students

One of the best feelings is when I find a book that I love and I can't put it down. I read it in every free moment that I get. You get so invested in the characters, the plot, the setting...it is an amazing experience. My students don't yet know how that feels.

My students are 7 and 8 years old from Queens, New York.

The majority do not speak English at home. Coming to school many are still learning English. Some of them have never even picked up a book or have ever been read to before coming here. There are little or no resources in these student's homes that encourage reading. Our socioeconomic level is on the lower end. We are a Title 1 school where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We really need all the help in the classroom that we can get.

My Project

My 28, third graders are getting into a great place in their reading life. They are getting to the age where they are not reading picture books anymore and just starting to read chapter books. They are starting to learn how to fall in love with characters, invest themselves into a story line, and how to make pictures in their mind of what they are reading. The challenge that we are all facing is that our library of independent reading books is bare, to say the least. Our books have been read and re-read countless amounts of times. Practically all of the covers are ripped or missing. We are constantly throwing books away that are falling apart. We don't have books by the most popular and relevant authors for our age group. Reading can be so exciting and in our classroom it just isn't. My students have very few books at home and little to no access to bookstores. Reading needs to be valued at school because often times at home it is not.

Please help us out.

My students need fresh new books that interest them and are in one piece. Bring our library back to life. I want to make reading exciting again for my students. We really need as many books as we can get. Thank you.
