My Students

I'm very fortunate to work with an exceptionally talented, motivated group of Visual Arts students. My students have chosen to pursue their artistic dreams through studying at a prestigious public Arts high school in Manhattan. To gain a seat in the school these students auditioned by submitting a portfolio (when they were a mere 12 or 13 years old), and sit for a rigorous drawing exam. Upon beginning their study, students take a daily 90-minute drawing and painting class where their burgeoning skills are further developed and refined. As students progress from freshman year to sophomore year, they also study Ceramics and Printmaking. As a Sophomore, students take Intro to Design in the fall, and Basic Painting in the spring. These are a committed and passionate group of young artists.

My students are a dedicated bunch.

Students may live in any one of New York's five boroughs, and some travel long distances on the subway to reach school every day. In addition to the rich, serious work they do in studying drawing and painting, the academic courses they take are challenging courses. Many of my students take Advanced Placement courses in academic subject areas. Clubs and athletics also are priorities.

My Project

Quality art materials take students' ideas to a fresh, professional realm. When students create artwork with good art making supplies, they take the task more seriously and feel like "real artists". The materials requested will be used to teach students new skills, as well as teaching them how to use and maintain, as well as explore techniques and art-making possibilities.

I've seen students become surprised and develop confidence when they master a difficult technique, or art-making tool.

Students will get real, authentic experience in various drawing techniques (in both ink and ink wash, and watercolor painting), as well as learn the terminology of the tools and techniques. This knowledge and understanding helps students to take ownership of their work because they can use the terminology of the discipline.

This art making unit will produce vibrant, rich illustrations, which many will submit to art competitions and student art exhibitions.
