Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I created an activity for my students where they can compose their own music randomly using dry erase dice. Students write selected rhythm values or note names on each side of the dice. They roll the dice four times, once for each beat in the measure. Then, they write the rhythm values down on their whiteboards. When they are finished, they clap their rhythm or play their melody on an Orff mallet instrument.

This will help give students a starting point to compose their own music, which is often something that is left out in elementary music education.

I hope to do more composition work with my students as it pushes both of us out of our comfort zones and helps them discover their own musicianship.
