This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

¡Bienvenidos! I am the music teacher at JIE (K-8) which services a low income community of really friendly and appreciative families and students in the South-West area of Chicago.

Music is the favorite class for many of our students and as a music teacher I strongly believe music is not only fun, engaging and motivating but also helps encourage leadership, teamwork, self-confidence and discipline which are all very important skills we all take on in life.

I want to do my best to give the students of our school the best music education they can experience under my time with them and I certainly appreciate your help getting our students and families there.

My Project

The rhythm sticks will greatly help my kindergarten students learn music at home this year. The kindergarten students have started the school year with online music class, but most of the kids do not have musical instruments at home, missing out on the joy and fun of making music. During online music classes, the kids can use rhythm sticks to explore different rhythms, beats, while developing motor skills and musical skills.

Research has indicated that children with a strong rhythmic ability are more likely to read well, have good co-ordination and suffer fewer injuries.

Rhythm sticks are an invaluable tool when it comes to developing a sense of rhythm. Artistic expression is also encouraged. Children can begin to explore the whole realm of sound, tapping the sticks against the floor or other objects to see what different sounds they can make.

Rhythm sticks offer a simple means of artistic expression. Not only are they very simple to use but they form a wonderful tool for developing skills children need. Using them in the virtual music classroom enables children to learn these skills naturally while having fun.
