This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach pre-K to 5th grade. My students are a hard-working and curious group that wish to thrive and improve their skills in all areas.

Many of my students are English learners who find in making-music an even field where they can show their competency and joy of learning.

A great majority of them come from immigrant household mostly from Dominican Republic but also from Venezuela, Mexico and the Middle East. Our school is, in many cases, the only window through which they can see the world.

My students’ families recognize the value of music in their lives. Parents come up to me with requests for free music lessons or guidance on how to use music to help their kids learn and be happy.

My students’ lives are rich with stories of struggle and desire for improvement. As their teacher and as an immigrant myself I root for their continued success in all endeavors.

Music helps children say things they can’t say and express feelings that they may not even know they have. Music moves them and helps them be secure in their learning experiences and ready for more.

My Project

I am requesting xylophones to improve my students' ability to hear and play music. My students show a great interest and aptitude for music. Unfortunately, our school doesn’t have yet all the needed materials and instruments to help students explore music creatively and reach their potential.

Restrictions regarding distancing and gathering make it even more difficult to bring children regularly to the music room.

Even in the music room students have access to a limited array of instruments.

These xylophones in cases will provide my students the chance to work on their desks, in small spaces, exploring sounds vibrations and also learning music and performing. They are also easy to transport from one room to the next (with cleaning included in between). These xylophones will also be a great help when students are presented with bigger Orff instruments in the upper grades or in after school programs since the arrangement of notes is the same. Our school is in the process of obtaining enough instruments for a full percussion orchestra.

I envision myself using these instruments for all grades. However, I believe that they would be a real asset on my teaching the younger grades and Kindergarten.
