My Project

I often tell people that our students arrive at school hungry: hungry for love, hungry for food, and hungry for an education. Many overcome numerous problems at home that most adults never have to face. However, despite these circumstances, they still arrive each day with bright, eager faces, ready to learn. Like almost all children, when they can become engaged in learning through the use of hands-on materials as well as games and play, success follows at a higher rate.

The following is my favorite teaching quote: "I call my students "my kids" because in our year together they aren't just kids on my class roster, they become a part of my heart." The teachers in my district will do everything possible to help "our kids."

Rhyming is a skill that becomes concrete when students can both hear and see the rhymes. By playing these games with volunteers, we are hoping to fill in this phonological gap that can cause reading problems for our first graders. I am excited to see their faces light up as they play these games; not even realizing that they are learning a reading skill while having fun.
