Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a public school in Elmhurst, Queens that serves a low-income population of over seventeen hundred students. This year, we are following a fully in person learning style as we go back into school, meaning that my students will have to learn to transition from learning on devices to using pencil and paper again. Many of my students have been at home for more than an entire year and are not acclimated to sitting in a desk with peers surrounding them, ready to learn.

My students are sweet, determined, enthusiastic learners who deserve to the materials to help them support their learning experience.

I want to create the most positive and equitable learning experience for my students by rewarding them when they demonstrate positive classroom behaviors.

My Project

Every year, I stock my prize box with a variety of different rewards where students earn tickets to redeem them from prizes. These rewards are highly coveted by my students and will keep them engaged in learning. Students know that they can earn tickets by staying engaged, focused, and persevering through problems they face in the classroom. They can redeem these tickets for prizes at the end of each week.

By incentivizing my learning, students learn to build and grow positive learning behaviors.

These are the qualities I want to help foster in my students in order for them to become leaders when they move onto middle school. Students will work on these qualities until it becomes second nature for them and they will blossom into independent learners.
