My Students

My students are phenomenal. I have a range of socioeconomic statuses in my classroom with quite a few on the lower end. This is my second year at DuPont and every student that has come through my classroom so far holds a special place in my heart. It amazes me how kind, thoughtful, funny, and intelligent all these kids are and it makes me want to do everything I can to give back to them.

DuPont is so special to me, as are the kids, because this is my hometown.

I walked the same halls, lived in the same areas, and even had some of the same teachers. Now I am back and I want to do everything in my power to make their experience at DuPont as special as mine was.

My Project

This year I brought a couple of cheap chairs and my husbands old bean bag chair in as a reward for students who do well on a test or students who went out of their way to help another student when they thought no one was looking. Throughout the year the students have LOVED sitting in those seats. Every test and quiz I have more and more A's and B's because students are wanting a couple days in the bean bag chair. I knew going in I would have to eventually replace these cheaper, older, flexible seating options with something nicer and newer like the Redcamp Bungee Chair and the Big Joe Bean Bag

While I'd eventually like to change a lot about the seating and desks in my classroom, right now my focus is on making sure that there is something nice I can do for the kids who are coming and doing the right things every day.

Having these sort of flexible arrangements for seating has also really improved the dynamic. Since students know they are going to get a reward (even if that reward is just a couple days in a comfy seat) passing back tests has turned from a mundane task to a mini award ceremony. When I announce the A's and B's every student claps for the people who did the best, which is something that I had not experienced before in a classroom, and didn't think I'd experience with teenagers. It is truly heartwarming watching them get excited for one another over a math test grade and I really hope to keep that going in the coming years!
