Rewarding Knowledge Instead of Behavior

My students need pencil grips, writing claws, jumbo pencils, and crayons to reward their knowledge and learning. When students use their knowledge to answer questions or help another student they are rewarded.

My Students

A typical day in my kindergarten class is buzzing with students excited about learning. When we are learning about numbers we play a game called "Name that Number". When we are learning I try to make everything a game, Students are excited and eager to earn "Knowledge Points". "Learning is fun"

My students are kids from all walks of life.

Some of them went to Pre school and for some this this their first experience with school. They are excited and nervous about kindergarten. Most want to go back to Pre-k to be with their old teacher and play. My school is a pre-k to 8 school in a low income area where we have lots low income shelter families. Our school is set up in wings where kindergarten students are in a safe area close to the lunchroom and science center. When our families are unable to give their child needed supplies we work as a school community to put together everything from clothes, food and school supplies to make our kids feel wanted. We do this without making parents feel embarrassed. Our school is across from the ocean and when Hurricane Sandy hit we were out of our building for months due to damage. Families were displaced and we had drives to help. When it is hurricane season we are always concerned with how our school communities safety.

My Project

I will use this material to reward students knowledge and learning, not for just behaving in class. This material will be used as a motivation for learning. Most students are afraid to answer questions due to fear of getting the wrong answer. I encourage all answers in my class. We use all answers as a learning experience. Most teachers give out rewards for behavior leaving one or two students never able to get a reward. I do not reward behavior because you should always be on your best behavior. What I do reward is knowledge and all students have it, no matter at what level. Students receive points and at the end of the week they can cash in for pencils, erasers, crayons. Students will earn points for answering questions. Giving information on a topic. Adding to what some else has said. Students could also earn points for reading to the class saying words, spelling. I also give points for kindness. I believe this will impact students by giving them self confidence in class

This project addresses every child at every level and every need.

It shows them that no matter what your knowledge is you have it and it will be rewarded. This project makes a difference because it helps children love learning and become life long learners. Is shows them with knowledge comes rewards. It shows the student that is always in trouble for behavior that they could earn a reward. It just take a minute and answer one question. It teaches students to work towards something.
