Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of 6th and 7th grade students who come to school everyday with an incredible amount of curiosity about the world and a desire to learn. My school is a Title 1 school, and 98% of our students come from low-income households. Many of them, at only 11, 12, and 13 years old, already have many adult responsibilities at home, such as taking care of younger siblings or grandparents. School is where they get the chance to forget those worries for a few hours and focus on being kids and learning. In my English class, I often have the privilege of seeing light bulbs turn on as students realize how captivating learning through literature can be.

Unfortunately, most of the literature available to students on campus and at home is not relevant to their lives, and without the right books, that interest that was once sparked eventually fades.

These students must not forget the value in furthering their own education and understanding of the world through literature. They have the abilities necessary to do so, but without relevant books, they quickly begin to think that maybe books just are not meant for them. This must change.

My Project

Reviving our classroom library will help bring in relevant literature that our students actually want to read! One of my constant struggles is convincing my students that reading can be of interest to all of them. They believe this is true when we read engaging texts together in the classroom, but the moment they are asked to choose a book of their own, they say "Nothing looks good." This response is frustrating, mainly because it makes sense.

If we can revive our classroom library, students will finally be able to immerse themselves into worlds that are much more similar to their own.

These are the types of texts that they enjoy reading most in the classroom, so why aren't they available to them to read outside of the classroom?

Helping our classroom library grow will not only help students find relevant materials, it will help them realize that they ARE capable readers, that they DO have the stamina to finish reading a book, and that they CAN go on new adventures just by picking up a great book. I do not want their love for reading to stop when I stop reading to them. Let's help them find meaning in literature on their own.
