My Students

If we don't learn from our history, we are doomed to repeat our mistakes. Especially in a world where the content areas are pushed to the back burner in favor of English Language Arts and mathematics, it is so important for students to learn about the history of our magnificent country.

My fourth graders are a bunch of inquisitive, ambitious kids.

They love learning new things and never have a shortage of questions! Our school strives to foster this love of knowledge within all of our students across all grades. We try to make sure that they feel comfortable enough to ask these higher-order questions, and we require all of the materials that will allow them to find the answers through their inquiry-based work. We are a Title l school, and many of our students live below the poverty line.

My Project

The American Revolution is a huge topic in the fourth grade curriculum. In our reading, writing, and social studies units, students will be studying about all of the events that led up to the Revolution, all of the people who played critical roles, and the impacts the War had on the formation of our country. In order to conduct this research, the students will need a variety of books across the topic that they can read through, looking for the information they need. Based off of their specified research (ex: One group might research the Boston Massacre while another will research the Battles of Lexington and Concord), students will then write informational books, using all of their information as well as their knowledge of text features.

These books will really impact the success of the reading, writing, and social studies units.

If my students have more books to research from, they will be able to have their own books that they can take home to research, rather than having to only use books in the classroom because there are so few available. My students will then have more independent reading time, which will hopefully enable a love of history!
