This student-led project is led by Juniors and Seniors in my Environment GIS class. All seven members, John, Leon, Karina, Demetrio, Dro, Arineh and Michelle, are excited to help the environment and keep their campus clean and eco friendly. These students are all very concerned about pollution, which is why they came together and formed the Eco Squad.
We originally developed this idea when walking by the field on our campus, and noticing the amount of plastic water bottles scattered all across the ground. That’s when we thought about buying Elkay’s refillable water bottle stations.
This project is very important to my students because they believe that having a clean, waste-free campus is essential to the learning process and plastic pollution is a huge issue that could have serious consequences for future generations.
This student led group has already bought the station, arranged for it to be delivered, and convinced the district to install it. This shows how dedicated and meticulous these students are, and finishing this project will help promote these qualities throughout the whole school.
These water bottles are required to stop plastic pollution in our school. All of our students will benefit from this change and the students doing this project specifically will learn about the importance of the environment and that they can make a positive change in their communities. These water bottles will be used along with Elkay refillable water bottle stations, which the students are getting installed as a part of the Lexus Eco Challenge. We will be giving these bottles out for free to students and staff, so that they always have access to free, clean water. This will create a prominent school culture of being Eco-friendly. We would like to inform our peers of this environmental issue, and passing out water bottles will propagate the message that our campus is important and we need to keep it clean. Your generous contributions will help keep our campus clean and make sure nobody goes thirsty.
In Their Own Words
With this project, we're trying to help our school become a cleaner, more Eco-friendly place. Plastic pollution is an increasingly prominent issue in our society, and we want to help in any way we can. We have been dedicated to helping improve our school since the start of this project, and are excited to finally be making a noticeable impact.
Working together with a group and our group leaders, as well as working directly with administrators and company representatives has taught us how to better handle ourselves in a professional business environment. Furthermore, being given specific roles and jobs in our group has taught us about teamwork, and our student Project Manager and Assistant Project Manager have certainly learned important leadership skills.
This project is important to stop our campus from becoming littered with water bottles, and will solve the pollution problem we have while also setting an example for other schools and hopefully leading others to follow in our footsteps. If we make an impact here, it will pave the way for other schools in our district to become more Eco-friendly.
