Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how curious you were when you were a child and all you wanted to do was to discover on your own? I bet you remember an adult telling you "do not touch that"!! I want my children to develop their own curiosities during science.

My students live in apartment buildings that are isolated from nature.

Almost all of my students come from lower economic homes where surviving the daily life is a challenge. My school houses children who are mostly Latin Americans and African American. My children feel safe at school as this is their second home. They are so grateful for every little thing that is done for them. As a first grade teacher, my job is to continue to foster the natural curiosity my students have inside of them. Science is a subject that must be taught hands-on with room for exploration and creativity. With all the pressure of teaching my children reading and mathematics, I think that it is crucial to leave time for science. After all, my job is to prepare them to face the real world with the rest of the population so they could come out of the vicious cycle of poverty.

My Project

In my school we are not allowed to bring in class pets due to rodent infestation. The only animals that are allowed are fish. I saw the most amazing fish tank online. I think that it would be amazing for my children to learn how to take care of a class pet. In the process, it will also teach them about animals and scientific concepts like life cycle, different habitats. I know that it would be a great surprise for them. I also saw great specimen of animals and plants. I know they will be excited to learn about it. I also know that it will allow the visual and kinesthetic learning styles to come through. During centers I will have my children play with the science centers after covering the concepts with the whole class.

My project is so important because it restores and creates curious kids who are taught to go with their curiosity instead of just drilling facts in their heads.

Curious kids means smart kids, which means smart future citizens that will make smart choices for this country!
