My Students

I teach middle school band to over 400 6th, 7th, and 8th graders! My students come from so many walks of life, and they are brought together by the communal effort of learning to play an instrument and perform as a group. For many, band is a safe haven and a place they know they will be successful. It is also a place where many thrive even when they struggle in other ways in the building.

My band program provides opportunities for my students to learn and grow through music.

The skills they learn in band will serve them beyond their musical endeavors. Cooperation, teamwork, and getting their brains working in a way no other class can helps provide them with a well-rounded educational experience.

My Project

These materials will be used to help us support distance learning for band throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Right now, we are running full in-person instruction which has been complicated by contact tracing and students being sent out to quarantine. These students must be learning from home with support from us in school. The resources I am requesting include textbook resources to support teaching music through composition using technology, some connector cables for use on the teacher end to help support distance learning, and a text that connects the social-emotional learning side of music teaching so that we can better serve our students. We also cannot use our normal rewards, so there is a pack of fun stickers to use as rewards for students.
