My Students

Ask a student to sound out a word as simple as "fin" and often times they are at a lost. They may not know what a fin is. This is a daily occurrence for students who have a learning disability and are second language learners. Building a memory of sounds, words, and vocabulary can be a challenge.

My students range in grade from Kindergarten to 5th graders.

They are all faced with a variety of challenges from learning disabilities that include autism, hyperactivity to the most common working memory and processing issues. As a Resource Teacher, I am always looking for ways to expose my students to real life vocabulary and situations to help them in remembering important information. Learning and applying the rules of reading English words is especially difficult for second language learners who have limited exposure to their world because of their social-economic limitations.

My Project

Asking an Resource student to read a simple word such as "fin" could be a difficult task but when given a model of a fish and demonstrating what a fin is on a fish, or showing a fin used for swimming provides students with a realistic model. This simple action helps the brain to cement that information into a students memory. The use of teaching tubs provide students with immediate understanding of what is being discussed. The tubs are filled with real world items such as a hen, a pig or a drum. Each tub is neatly organized by letter, vowel or blend. The items associated with each sound help students to decode words with vowels, consonants or diagraph blends. Items in the teaching tubs, help students understand not only simple words but they also begin to generalize rules to decode multi-syllabic words. Learning and applying rules of English can be made easier through hands-on activities. There are numerous games and activities that can be used with the items in the tubs.

I have been wishing for these teaching tubs for several years but due to cut-backs in Special Education funding there is no budget for such materials.

I started creating my own tubs but over time many of the items have been broken or lost. The granting of this project would make many students very happy because learning can be fun and memorable with hands-on opportunities.
