I teach ELA to a remarkable group of students. My school is rural, and the town is a very tight-knit community. These students come mostly from hard-working farm and factory families. Most of my students live at or below the poverty line: my school qualifies for a program where 100% of the students get free breakfast and lunch. My classroom is also like a family. I end every class with "I love you. Have a great rest of your day!" Even though these are high school students, they still want school to be fun and exciting. I want to give them current materials and as many hands-on lessons that I can - but resources are often expensive!
I want students to know that my classroom is a safe place for learning, growing, and overcoming challenges.
Some students I teach are very reluctant readers and writers at the beginning of the school year, but I hope that they gain a better love for learning throughout the course of the year. Reading and writing are such a foundation for whatever career, vocational, or college path that they choose to pursue.
My Project
I teach two classes of students in a college bound English course. This class consists of intense reading and analytic research. Many of my students have said that they will be the first member of their family to go to college. So it is important to me that I prepare them for college writing. However, my resources in my classroom are limited and the books I have for MLA documentation are outdated. Newer versions are available and my students need to be prepared to use the new style in college.
In order for my students to learn the correct way to write and document research, I need MLA resource books and writing guides so that when they get to college they will be successful.
When we write papers in this writing class, students will be able to refer to these manuals if they use a source in their research. I will be able to teach them to avoid plagiarism and document their facts. The resources also help to serve as a visual guide on formatting papers. These are all necessary skills that these students will need to be successful no matter what post-secondary collegiate program they pursue.
