Researchers in Need

My students need a nice camera to take photos of school events for our newspaper. We have a school newspaper that is very substantial. We lack a camera for visuals.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a district with very little opportunity, I am honored to be allowed to produce a school newspaper that is written by students. They are amazing and put everything into their work. Many of these kids do not have opportunities to explore the world. We do that with research, interviews and text.

My students are not fortunate financially or socially.

They are poverty level and most of them go home to an empty house because both parents work. They do not have technology at home nor do they understand what news is. Our paper allows them to explore the world, community and school and share it with the rest of the building. The other students in the school get excited when they see our issues released. These kids deserve opportunities to grow and build background knowledge that they would not otherwise have due to the fact that most of them do not even leave their own neighborhoods. Being on the school newspaper gives them the chance to see beyond their run down neighborhoods and hard working, stressed out parents. They deserve the same luxuries as students in more fortunate neighborhood schools.

My Project

Our newspaper is rich in informational text and alive with news. The one thing that is lacking is the visuals to match our stories. Having a good camera to take photo memories of our moments around the building will be a great benefit. We currently have two photographers on our Jupiter staff. Currently, they use my cellular phone to take photos. This camera would be beneficial to all of us.

I see the faces of my second and third graders light up when they come to newspaper club.

They are driven by the opportunity to be a part of something special and fun. The difference that will be made is in the happiness of a few children who thrive to share what they learn and have a place in the world. The educational value combined with the emotional value will make a difference in not just the students in the club but the entire school.
