My Students

Please help us reach our goal of having a successful and effective research workshop this year! I am leaving the textbook on the shelf this year and hoping to use all authentic texts to teach science and social studies.

My students are like dry sponges just waiting to soak up all the knowledge they can!

Our school is located in neighborhood plagued with obstacles like drugs, poverty, single-parent homes, and violence within a large, urban district in Illinois. Although my students face many challenges everyday, they LOVE coming to school and they LOVE to learn. Every year I find that the personality of my classes are a little different, but one thing remains the same: all of my students are excited to learn about non-fiction topics. Whether it's another country, an animal, or extreme weather, content gets my students fired up about learning!

My Project

This year, I am embarking on an exciting journey to change the way I teach science and social studies content. I am determined to go deeper into six main topics rather than cover a wide range of things at a surface level. I plan to teach content in an inquiry-based research workshop, which means students' interests and passions will be guiding my planning and their learning. In order to do this, I will need a plethora of research materials. My students need 32 clipboards and a class-subscription to Time For Kids for research workshop. My school, like many schools, has limited funding and cannot possibly provide all classrooms with enough research materials to make this happen to the best of our ability. Therefore, I need your help. Having a subscription to Time for Kids will allow students to read engaging non-fiction at their level, encouraging real questions that may turn into research topics. This adventure is what I am most looking forward to in this upcoming school year. I truly believe this model of teaching content will get our students excited about learning!

This project is so important to me because I know it will make a difference in my students' ability to think strategically, synthesize, read, write, and use oral language to present their findings.

With the Common Core State Standards being rolled out, this non-fiction resource will help meet those standards while engaging students in authentic learning experiences. Thank you so much in advance for helping me achieve my goal of providing my students with the very best education possible.
