Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh- and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified—from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

The pandemic has hit my students hard: their natural exuberance has taken a hit because they are isolated from their friends and teachers.

Many of them are developing anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal hasn't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they have experienced for the past 18 months. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID and are struggling with grief as well.

Although I can't solve all their problems, I can do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.

My Project

Computer science and technology are areas of great growth and opportunity, but unfortunately, the industry is not diverse when it comes to people of color and women. I want to motivate my diverse students to pursue computer science careers, but many are intimidated by the topics and don't see themselves represented in the industry. It's time for racial justice, equity, and representation to come to the computer sciences!

That's where Teachers Pay Teachers comes in: there are tons of resources, including lesson plans, posters, activities, and more that can highlight the women and people of color involved in computer science today.

While I love teaching electives that engage students, these courses don't come with textbooks or any curriculum to speak of. I have to develop all the lessons for my STEAM, technology, and computer apps classes myself. My students and I would be extremely grateful to have robust, teacher-created lessons to use in class that recognize the contributions of women and people of color! I can't wait to see how my students can change technology for the better in the future!
