Representation Matters

Help me give my students books featuring diverse characters and historical figures to add to our Representation Library. We also need organizational bins to keep our books well cared for and organized.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners. They come to school, often in a new country, where the language that surrounds them is not their first language. They come into a classroom each day, where they may not understand everything that others are saying. They are learning everything their English speaking peers are, all while learning the English language.

My students come from all over the world, to a new school, excited to learn.

Often, their home languages do not use the same alphabet, and they do not see books with characters that look like them. Learning to read and write, while learning a new language can be difficult, but my students always have smiles on their faces. They are excited to learn, and always give their best, in pursuit of their own 'American Dream'. In return, I always strive to give them my best.

My Project

These books will make a difference in the lives of my students, and all of the students in the entire school. They can be utilized as read alouds and mentor texts for classrooms at all grade levels, as well as independent reading books for older students.

Having books with diverse characters would allow all students to feel represented, as well as allow the other students to see children different from them.

I want my student's to feel welcome and represented in the books we read.

We have started a lending library for the entire elementary school. Teachers from kindergarten all the way through fifth grade have access to these books to use with their students. I like to highlight a book weekly so teacher's know what resources they have at their disposal. I am requesting more books to continue to build our library.

This past spring multiple teachers were able to utilize the lending library for units of study, independent reading and read alouds. I would like to continue this momentum by having even more options to offer teachers.

Thank you for helping me continue to build a diverse library that is filled with books that contain characters who look like all different kinds of people.
