Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in San Diego, CA. We are a small neighborhood school, and we call ourselves "the small school with a big heart." Our school does its best to celebrate diversity in all regards (cultural, ethnic, physical, and neurological), but the print resources that are currently in our classroom libraries do not represent the stories and experiences of leaders that are often left out of our school history books. My personal goal everyday is to create an engaging, safe, and comfortable environment for each student who walks through the gates of my school. .

My third graders are highly intelligent, kind, energetic, and collaborative and deserve to have a diverse library collection that can support them all in finding titles that they can read and connect with on some level while affirming their own cultural identities and hopefully developing important positive insights about others.

My Project

These books will help represent the stories and experiences of our incredibly diverse country. These books not only will represent people in our history that might be otherwise underrepresented but will also allow students to read about others who may or may not have a different background than them. These books will allow students into a world in which they can see characters and themes that reflect their identities and experiences, such as skin color or hairstyle, family and home life structures, spoken languages, or abilities.

Having a diverse collection can support all students in finding titles that they can read and connect with on some level while affirming their own cultural identities and hopefully developing important positive insights about others.

These mentor texts are going to be a powerful addition to our classroom library. We will analyze how we are influenced by our own implicit biases. We will learn that a conversation to understand another's viewpoint is not synonymous with a debate. As the U.S. school-age population grows more diverse, students of color are less likely than white students to see books with characters that look like them or share their cultural background. I look forward to creating new, meaningful experiences for my students to make connections to, and learn from, the books they read.
