This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
This project can be seen as a response to two glaring truths. The first is that, as a result of the COVID-19 and pre-existing inequality within the education system, immense quantities our scholars are reading below grade level. The second is that research in education has repeatedly shown that scholars are more likely to comprehend and engage with texts that are culturally relevant to their lives.
In order to promote literacy, we are seeking to acquire a number of texts that feature heroes that represent the communities of our students.
Too often, students lack access to texts that have role models they can relate to, and nowhere is this more true than in public education, which often features literary classics that, due to their dated status, often lack people of color as central characters with agency. For this reason, the texts selected all feature protagonists that represent my students' communities. By helping to donate to this campaign, you will be allowing young men of color in the Bronx to envision worlds in which they too can be the hero.
