Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title I school. Ninety percent of the students we serve are socio-economically disadvantaged. Eighty-one percent of the students are Hispanic/Latino. Fourteen point two percent of the students are Asian. Three percent of the students are White, and two percent are classified as other. These kids are faced with many challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. However, those challenges do not define them. My students are encouraged to persevere and overcome through hard work. My course involves project-based learning to encourage students to become problem solvers and critical thinkers, so they have the skills necessary to succeed in life.

My Project

In order to increase engagement and make learning more interesting, I often have my students create posters. Examples of posters include cartoon or document analyses, WWI propaganda, WWII Memorials for assigned battles, visual analogies to learn acts of US imperialism, vocabulary/one-page reviews, magazine examples of determinants of demand.

Even though my students are in high school, they LOVE the Mr. Sketch scented markers.

They get excited every time I bring them out. Unfortunately, the markers are drying out. The skinny expo markers are used for mini-whiteboards are also drying out. Lastly, the glue used for the projects and notebooks in this class is also out. These supplies are important to making learning fun.
