Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Living in an inner city infested with crime, poverty and gangs is the reality my students face on a daily basis. Unfortunately, computers in the home have been out of reach for their families. My students' access to computers is limited to what I can provide in the classroom.

My kindergarteners attend an urban public elementary school in which all of its fourteen hundred students participate in a federally funded free-lunch program.

All of my students are second language learners and have parents with no or very limited English language skills. They are from low economic backgrounds, but are hard working inquisitive learners. My students are captivated by fables and folk tales. They enjoy participating in class discussions. They love music and dance. Most recently, my students have entered the world of writing. They have discovered the power of converting speech to printed words. My kindergarteners, their parents, and I are all proud of the progress they have been making.

My Project

Due to budget shortages, my school is unable to replace my classroom's outdated computers. Currently, my kindergarteners are forced to struggle with computers that have long start-up times, numerous freezes and incompatibility issues. Furthermore, my students are unable to print any of their written work from our classroom computers. However, with a Sony VAIO Laptop, my students could print projects they have created, access websites at top speeds, and conduct research without delays and malfunctions. They could also explore the interactive computer programs which are embedded in our district's curriculum. A Sony VAIO would give my students access to current technology that will inevitably prepare them for the future.

The ability to print writing projects, conduct research, and engage in interactive learning programs from a Sony VAIO Laptop computer can be a powerful motivator in my classroom.

This laptop may also boost attendance levels in my classroom. A Sony laptop could help my classroom overcome its technological limitations and thus, give my students the 21st Century knowledge and skills that are needed in today's society.
