My Project

The tables and chairs in this project will benefit more than 150 computer science students everyday! Our current desks and chairs are very old and uncomfortable. Many of them are mismatched from different decades and those metal trays underneath are broken and unable to hold anything anymore.

I believe the quality and care put into the physical materials, furniture, and decor contributes to the overall learning environment of a classroom.

When a classroom is run-down and has broken furniture, that communicates to students that what happens in this classroom is just not as important as what may happen in a nicer looking space. Students spend a significant amount of their time sitting in desks at school. It would be such a gift to my students if those tables and chairs were a better quality. A classroom does not need to be extravagant to be a great learning space. However, having desks that are in decent shape is really important.

Also these tables and chairs will make it easier for my computer science students to collaborate on their programs. The chairs will allow more flexible grouping. When students are working on their programs and need help debugging, they can simply pull up their chair to each other's table and work together. The tables also allow for students to work standing up, which is an amazing feature and can help those students that prefer not to sit all day!
