This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a social worker and the children I primarily work with are special education. I use toys heavily in my work because I find my students express themselves so much better using play. But currently, we are working primarily remotely because schools in NYC have not fully opened due to COVID. This is challenging because not all students have the supplies they need for optimal learning and/or having their mandated services.

I am looking to create packages the parents can pick up for students who are in remote learning.

The package would be a play/sensory/art kit that will allow the students to work on a project and/or game with an interventionist. The kit will also have sensory items that can be used to self soothe. Our special education populations are having some of the toughest times with remote learning and will fall behind quickly if they do not receive adequate help.

My Project

The goal of the project is to create kits filled with sensory-stimulating items such as playdoh, water beads, and kinetic sand for the students to take home and use during remote learning sessions and remote therapy sessions. Many of our special education students are struggling with self-control and strong feelings while at home in remote learning and need help learning to express their feelings and control their impulses using the materials with the guidance of a counselor or therapist. They will even be able to use tubes and glitter to make their own calming bottles that they can design themselves.
