Remote - Low Tech Learning While Engaged

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are lovely, energetic, 3 to 7-year-olds from the Bronx who have a variety of academic, developmental, and social-emotional needs with disabilities that range from autism to speech and language disorders.

At this time, most of them are struggling to cope with remote learning, the changes in their routines, and the lack of valuable hands-on materials that support learning in developmentally appropriate ways.

Students learn best through direct hands-on activities. One student called several times throughout the summer so he could have me help him practice his reading and writing because he did not want to "not know it when we go back." Another student refused to do any of the work with his family using the resources they had. When he received a box that was dropped off at his home, he was willing to engage with both his parents and me, excited about the new materials. This showed the need for shared resources. A need for a variety of materials that fosters their hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, concentration, and more. However, most of them do not have these materials available within their homes nor do their parents have the resources by which to acquire them.

My Project

Through the use of a variety of manipulatives, the children will get a chance to practice skills learned. Materials will be loaned to students for 2 weeks at a time (disinfected, sterilized, and sit for a week before being packaged and loaned out to another family). The activities shipped will coincide with speech and academic lessons being taught to them at the time. The students will then get the chance to practice the skills independently or with the help of the caregiver based on information being currently learned online live. During live discussions and or other communication tools with caregivers, strategies for incorporating discussions, learning opportunities, motivation, and behavior management through the use of the resources they received will be given.

The materials will assist in the continued enhancement of the students' overall development and growth (primarily cognitive, fine motor, sensory, creativity, and their speech and language skills).
