Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Special needs students from a low-income neighborhood in the South Bronx, New York, receive therapy services in the local public school. We serve students in Pre-K through 5th grade.

My students have impairments with balance, motor coordination, muscle weakness, and delays in visual perceptual skills to name a few.

Our students with various diagnoses including autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and apraxia, require occupational, physical, and speech therapy services to help them access the school environment and curriculum to their fullest potential.

Due to COVID-19, the NYC DOE has implemented remote learning and teletherapy services which will continue for the remainder of the school year and possibly longer. My students have very limited resources at home. We have been doing our best-using technology, however, it is imperative that they continue to develop their muscles through use of hands-on tools and supplies such as scissors, crayons, pipe cleaners, and play-doh.

My Project

Asking our parents to purchase supplies would present a great financial burden. A donation towards these items would allow my student with a vision disorder the ability to work on hand strengthening, manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, visual motor, and visual perceptual skills through various multi-sensory activities. This student will be able to use materials that she currently does not have including puzzles, lined paper, stickers, lacing beads, string, pipe cleaners, an eye-spy game, and alphabet practice cards with markers. These basic supplies would have a large impact on this special child's life.
