My Students

I teach in an urban school with high poverty. Ninety percent receive free or reduced price lunch and a population that includes more than twenty-five percent English Language Learners.

Our ELLs (English Language Learners) came to the United States from a wide range of countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Congo, Nepal, Rwanda, Somalia, Syria and Tanzania.

The culture of our school encourages students to be active participants in their own education. Although we have challenges to overcome, there is always a positive and open attitude toward learning in our school.

My Project

Welcome to schooling during a pandemic! Our school district has opted to begin the 2020-2010 school year via remote learning. Many of our students come from large families and live in homes that do not have an ideal setup for remote learning. Students are sharing their learning space with other family members, which often results in noisy backgrounds.

When students are in a loud environment, they are sometimes unable to hear the teacher's lesson and they aren't able to unmute their microphones to participate.

Not being able to participate in class, can put students at a huge disadvantage! This challenge is even bigger if the student is still learning the English language.

Being able provide headphones with microphones to students who cannot otherwise afford them, will allow students to participate more fully in remote learning this year. They will be able to hear the instruction and they will be able to speak with their classmates and teachers.
