This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This upcoming school year, I am taking on yet another new challenge. I will have the chance of once again teaching all subject areas to a fifth grade classroom. The wonderful students at my school make up the most wonderful fifth graders located in South Philadelphia. Our school is a very diverse school where forty percent of our school population are English language learners. There are fifteen, different languages spoken at our school. Our school has a strong community that works endlessly for the benefit of our terrific students. Everyone from the principal, staff, students, and their parents work together each day.

Most recently the need to continue virtual learning has extended for our district until at least November 17th.

Due to this change, remote learning will be taking place. Therefore the need to ensure these 5th grade students have all the materials they need to continue learning is essential.

My Project

With the uncertainty of the Covid pandemic, many schools have either adapted a hybrid or full remote learning model temporarily. Our district has decided to go with a temporary full remote learning model until November. It is essential that none of our students fall further behind during this extended remote learning period. Particularly, our black, brown and economically disadvantaged students who are already behind in the achievement gap. In addition to them having the proper learning tools of an electronic device, and adequate internet, students will need hands-on instructional tools to help them stay cognitively engaged this fall.

For this project, I am requesting on the behalf of my students, the basic instructional tools.

Notebooks for all subject areas, pre-sharpened pencils, personal pencil sharpeners, dry erase boards, markers and erasers as well as basic solar calculators are some of these school basics that get overlooked for our students especially during virtual instruction. Please help my students get what they need to get the most out of remote learning, so they can continue to learn despite all of the ongoing obstacles they continue to face. Thank you!
